From there, we hiked up another 100m to the Mt. Misen Observatory, passing a number of shrines on the way:

Walking back down the mountain was well worth the effort: besides for even more great views, we shared the path with some monkeys!

On the way down the mountain, we passed Daisho-in Temple, one of the most amazing Buddhist temples I have ever seen.  This particular Buddhist Sect, known as the Shingon Sect, was founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai.  Buddhist priests and worshippers chant the Shingon words in the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit.

Along the winding path up to the temple are stone statues of 500 disciples of Shaka Nyorai, each with a unique facial expression.
